Following the loaded release of projects Nocturnal and Waking At Dawn, 21-year-old OVO artist Roy Wood$, an ostentatious outmanoeuvre of hip hop and alternative R&B, releases his debut album Say Less – a fiery fusion of distorted divides, hypnotic highs and luscious lows. / Words by Eve Zaidan
Say Less, Do More
In an interview with Sway In The Morning, the Toronto-based artist professed the meaning behind the album’s unvarnished title; reiterating the age old saying that actions, do in fact, speak louder than words.
“If I can’t see what you’re telling me, then I don’t want to hear it – say less, do more. Show me.”
Say Less echoes the tenuous mind and perilous soul caught in the fire of first attractions and lonely pursuits, where Woods’ hit single ‘What Are You On?’ and deep melody ‘The Way You Sex’, divulge the illustrious allure of a maverick femme.
Simply put, Wood$ is nothing but euphonious; powerfully returning real to R&B, while packing vocals of the ethereal kind – making you reminisce and vibe all at once.
Down on Luck, Up on Funk
Esteeming flow and forcing “nothing”, Wood$ is merely venerable.
With a tenacious transition from his signature Exis sound in ‘Monday to Monday’ and ‘Say Less’ to fusing funk amid soul sub-genres in ‘Little Bit Of Lovin’, ‘Something New’ and ‘B-Town’, there’s no slowing down for Roy Wood$, whom at this point – would be better defined as uproarious than “upcoming”.
The Rise of OVO Sound
Reverberatory and reminiscent alike, the track ‘Balance’ sees an unrivalled collaboration in Roy Wood$ together with PnB Rock and OVO royalty dvsn.
With the urban upsurge of OVO artists PARTYNEXTDOOR, Majid Jordan, Roy Wood$ and dvsn to name a few, all making major waves – it begs the question, could Drake’s OVO Sound become a music genre of its own?
