Having been in the rap game for almost a decade, Simmie Sims III, known by his stage name Buddy, finds his signature sound and breaks even with his new debut album Harlan & Alondra, a crafted self-revelation after six years spent in the making, and it’s worth every second.
Buddy, 24, a rising rose from Compton, was just 15-years-old when he first caught the attention of Pharrell Williams. After years in-between the scenes and a chop and change in management to releasing his first EP Idle Time without a record label, the son of a preacher returns true to himself, and here to deliver the Real Life S**t we’ve all been waiting for.
Harlan & Alondra explores the artist’s trying upbringing, ardently fusing contemporary R&B with rap, new age G-Funk and a whole lotta soul, featuring major players Khalid, Ty Dolla $ign, Snoop Dogg and A$AP Ferg, to name a few, and it’s simply sinless.
It’s the ultimate trip down the west coast with “Speechless”, “Young” and “Trouble on Central”, while delivering an empowered tribute to Black History Month with “Black”. With an unmatched “Shine”, Buddy is unquestionably, an artist firmly embedded in his roots.
– About a year since releasing his 7-track EP, There’s Alot Going On, there are signs that Vic Mensa is getting close to releasing his highly anticipated album.
Last year, Vic Mensa halted all work on a pending project titled Traffic in order to focus on the very personal and socially relevant EP, There’s Alot Going On. Now, according to the founder of Chicago hip-hop blog, Fake Shore Drive, Vic is preparing to drop some of his best work this summer.
With Chi-Town’s own No I.D executive producing the album, we already know that we can expect greatness. However, after getting a sneak peek, Fake Shore Drive founder, Andrew Barber was blown away and stated, “It’s Vic’s BEST work to date. Better than INNANETAPE. It’s an open book & he even brings that old Roc sound back…”
In a string of tweets, Barber also added that Joey Purp, Chief Keef, Pharrell Williams, Rivers Cuomo, and The-Dream will appear on what he calls an “easy contender for album of the year”.
Stay tuned for any word on an official release date.
Thundercat isn’t a household name quite yet, but with his prodigious talent, superstar co-signs, and a Grammy under his belt it would be wise to hop on the bandwagon now rather than later. The 25 year old bass guitarist, producer, and singer has worked with top-notch artists such as Erykah Badu, Childish Gambino,Vic Mensa, Mac Miller, Flying Lotus, and Ty Dolla Sign while earning his Grammy from work he did on Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly.
Now, Kendrick Lamar is returning the favor as he lends a helping hand to Thundercat’s upcoming project, Drunk. Alongside K-Dot, we will have features from Pharrell, Wiz, and Classic Rock/R&B artists Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins. Of the featured artists, Thundercat recently expressed the most excitement about working with Pharrell during a XXL interview when he said, “He’s been my hero since I was a young kid . . . and I got a chance to tell him that”.
Drunk is set to be released on February 24th and will be Thundercat’s first project since 2015’s The Beyond / Where the Giants Roam.
Thundercat has also released the single “Show You The Way” and an official track listing for Drunk. You can check out both below.
